The Hebrew Roots Movement Exposed

shofarThe Judaizing false gospel is becoming more and more prevalent within Christendom today. We see many groups emphasizing Sabbath, Jewish feasts, dietary restrictions, tassels, circumcision and other ceremonial elements of the Law of Moses as well as the “sacred name” of Yeshua (Jesus). Many Messianic and Hebrew Roots groups are falling into the blatant error which the New Testament describes as another gospel. While there is nothing inherently wrong with using the name “Yeshua” or keeping Sabbaths or Jewish feasts, the New Covenant makes it abundantly clear that these are not obligatory for Christians who obey Jesus. See my article on The Sabbath. We read in the NT:

But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them. And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren: And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment. (Acts 15:5-24)

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:6-9)

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. (Colossians 2:16,17)

Below is a preaching series which exposes many of these errors. While the preacher makes some lighthearted remarks and unnecessary tangents, the presentation is an overall helpful expose of what the Bible teaches on this topic.

John Hagee Denies Jesus as the Messiah

Hagee says that “the Jewish people as a whole did not reject Jesus as the Messiah,” that, “Jesus did not come to earth to be the Messiah,” and that, “Jesus refused by word and deed to claim to be the Messiah.” These comments and others demonstrate the danger of the Christian Zionist movement in changing the Gospel in order to defend Jewish people.

Privately with His disciples Jesus asked, “But whom say ye that I am?” And Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:15-17). In another private conversation with the woman at the well, the woman said to Jesus, “I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I that speak unto thee am he” (John 4:25,26). When under oath before the Jewish leaders, the high priest asked him, and said to him, “Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven” (Mark 14:61,62). When the Jews round about him, and said to him, “How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly,” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me” (John 10:24,25). Jesus’ public claims about being the Messiah may not be as plentiful as most Christians think, but Hagee’s claims dangerously contradict what Jesus clearly said and taught.

The following exchange is transcribed in another clip of Hagee in March 2008 featured below:

Hagee: They stood up and gave a thunderous applause of the things that was said. The Jewish leaders from all over America wrote me and said it was a historic day because you brought God’s presence to AIPAC and they said it was the turning of the tide for the Jewish community in America realized it was a new day where Christians truly were standing up for the Jewish people without a hidden agenda, without trying to get something for it. And it is a new day as people go to these 70 ‘Nights to honor Israel’ that we’ve had all over the nation. As pastors across the nation join Christians United for Israel and if you are a pastor watching this telecast and you want to become a part of Christians United for Israel I want you to go on line to CUFI.org or call me tomorrow and tell me who you are. I want to know your name because we have now 80,000 spiritual leaders in this nation and some of those spiritual leaders have a million and a million and a half names on their mailing list and email and we are talking to twenty eight to thirty eight, twenty eight to thirty million people every Monday morning in the intelligence report that I send out all over the nation. And when we go to Washington July 21, 22, 23 we are going before the government, just like Esther went before the government.

Lamb: Yeah

Hagee: It’s a practical effort to fulfill Isaiah 62; for Zion’s sake I will not be silent and I will not be quiet. Israel needs a strong voice in government other than themselves.

Lamb: Right, that’s right

Hagee: When a senator sees Mr. Goldberg coming he knows he is for the Jewish people but when he sees, when we took our Texas delegation of 850 people and our Senators saw them they thought ‘this is the whole national organization,’ I said ‘No, these are Texans that vote for you or against you based on your position of Israel.’ I said, ‘those two television cameras up there are recording what you are about to say and you live or die based on your support of Israel; you’re on.’

Lamb: Wow

Hagee: Whoa he walked up, I wanna tell you he was enthusiastic about it. But that’s what Israel needs in Washington is a voice. Washington doesn’t care if we go up there and sing Amazing Grace, they could care less. When you go in their office and say ‘I live in your district and I am here as a Christian to stand up for the nation of Israel.’ We give them talking points about what to say so every senator, every congressman hears the same message. But it’s very important that a Christian voice is practically doing something.

Marcus Lamb: That’s right, to benefit the Jewish State.

We live or die based on our support of Israel? Jesus made a clear distinction between those physical descendants of Abraham and the “seed of Abraham,” as we read in John’s Gospel: “They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:39-44).

John the Baptist spoke along the same lines to the multitudes, “Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham” (Luke 3:8). Thus, being God’s chosen people has nothing to do with belonging to the Jewish state or having Jewish pedigree, but has everything to do with belonging to the Kingdom of God and being a descendant of Abraham through faith in Christ. Jesus did come to earth to be the Messiah for both Jews and Gentiles.

POSTMODERNISM, FASCISM & THE CHURCH: Dr. Gene Edward Veith

While fascism was militarily defeated in WWII, the ideology of fascism is alive and well in some of the most unsuspected areas of our society. Dr. Gene Edward Veith is Provost and Professor of Literature at Patrick Henry College and author of Modern Fascism: The Threat to the Judeo-Christian Worldview. Dr. Veith explores the fascist influences that continue to permeate postmodern culture and thought in atheistic existentialism (Martin Heidegger and his following), literary deconstructionism (Paul De Man and his following), Darwinian evolution, relativism, mass media culture, violence, abortion, environmentalism, and rock concerts. Veith even demonstrates how fascism, perhaps unknowingly, permeates the current thinking in the Church, especially the postmodern Church. This interview is sure to stir up controversy and, hopefully, a careful rethinking of culture, politics and the Church.
